The skiing and riding at Stowe Mountain Resort is spread across two peaks: Mt. Mansfield, the highest in Vermont at 4,395 feet, and Spruce Peak.
The first sight of towering Mt. Mansfield, with its snow-capped summit above treeline, is breathtaking. Stowe has an undeniable blue-blood lineage as one of the oldest and most distinguished Eastern ski resorts. Its ski patrol, founded in 1934, is one of the oldest in the United States, and its winter carnival is the longest-running such event in the nation.
Stowe’s best-kept secret is its tree skiing. It’s best-kept because the resort has an official policy of not acknowledging its unofficial trails, glades and out-of-bounds terrain. Also the locals are extremely reluctant to share their secret stashes with outsiders and we don’t blame them one bit.
The town of Stowe, with its white-steepled church and main street lined with historic buildings, is the epitome of how most folks picture Vermont. It’s about 7 miles from the ski area. To truly enjoy all this area has to offer, you need a car.
