The Town of Mammoth Lakes is located in the heart of California’s Eastern Sierra Nevada mountain range. Mammoth Lakes is approx 325 miles north of Los Angeles, and about the same distance east of San Francisco. Mammoth is one of North America’s largest ski areas and is set in breathtakingly beautiful mountain scenery. Its altitude and position in the High Sierras helps it to average more than 30 feet of snowfall every single year. Mammoth’s 3500 acres of skiing make it one of the largest ski areas in North America and offers skiing to suit all abilities. Skiing in Mammoth is suited to both mixed ability groups and family skiing groups.

The drive to Mammoth is one of the most interesting in all the United States. Along Highway 395 are incredible geologic formations, historic salt mines, and the sites of early Hollywood western movies, both the lowest and highest points in the United States out of opposite car windows – Death Valley and Mt. Whitney at Lone Pine. The snow-frosted crown of Mt Whitney at 14,494 feet, the tallest mountain in the contiguous United States makes for a spectacular scenic interlude on this drive.

Skiing in Mammoth takes place on one huge mountain. That’s why they call it Mammoth. It offers both on and off piste skiing in diverse and varied terrain and has plenty of non-skiing activities.
