Courmayeur, nestled beneath Mont Blanc, is a bustling market town, full of character and atmosphere, and offering a warm Italian welcome. It suits beginners and intermediates, but advanced skiers can hire a guide to enjoy the vast choice of off piste, or if you have access to a car, the regional lift pass gives access to other resorts in the Aosta valley, such as La Thuile (itself linked to La Rosiere in France), Pila & Champoluc.
At less than 2 hours drive from Geneva or Turin, Courmayeur is an appealing weekend destination, and the Mont Blanc Tunnel makes a day trip to Chamonix feasible. It is also popular with the residents of Milan and Turin, who come mainly at weekends, creating a particularly lively atmosphere.
The heart of the old village is the Via Roma: a cobbled and pedestrianized street, which is lined with boutiques, bars, delicatessens and expensive interior decoration and antique shops.
Heli-skiing is possible from a number of fixed drops above the Val Veny, and there are 30km of spectacular cross-country trails at Val Ferrat.
