Obergurgl is well known to skiers worldwide thanks to its long standing in the history of the sport and its status as one of the more picturesque and peaceful Alpine villages, set in the spectacular grandeur of the Oetztal Tirol. But not everyone realises there are actually three Gurgls – Untergurgl (or ‘Under gurgl’), Hoch Gurgl (or High Gurgl, at 2150 metres, 7050 feet), and the famous Obergurgl.

Another thing people don’t realise is just how high Obergurgl itself is – one of the highest genuine villages in the Alps at 1930 m (5900 feet). This means that the snow can lie at village level from November to May and thanks to snow making, that means the big vertical is skiable all season.

Until the 1997/98 season, the Gurgl’s skiing had always been divided in two, with a bus link between the slopes above Untergurgl and Hochgugl and those above Obergurgl. That all changed with the opening of the new ‘Top Express Gurgl’ 8-seater gondola which whisks skiers in each direction, offering spectacular views of the surrounding glacier mountainscape during the 8 minute journey.
